The Federation of European Dental Competent Authorities and Regulators (FEDCAR) works in collaboration with councils, public bodies, and European chambers for the registration, regulation, and supervision of dental practitioners. The World Health Organization celebrated World Oral Health Day in March 2024 and involved the countries in the South-East Asia region along with other partners to promote the importance of oral health and to minimize the burden of oral diseases. According to the WHO, the estimated cases of oral diseases and related conditions were 3.5 billion globally in 2019. The WHO member states adopted a global strategy on oral health and it has the vision of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for oral health to reach all communities and individuals by 2030.

Oral Disease Surge and Rising Healthcare Costs

The South-East Asia region showed the highest cases of oral diseases in 2019 with approximately 900 million oral disease cases. The WHO offered actionable guidance and technical assistance to all countries in South-East Asia through the action plan for oral health 2022-2030. All member states adopted the WHO action plan and started implementing the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the WHO MPOWER Package. According to the World Health Statistics 2024, about 20.2% of healthcare respondents to dental services were observed in the year 2023 as per the healthcare needs among Ukrainian refugees in Poland while the same respondents were 18.2% in 2022. The WHO data showed that the refugees were spending 25% more than their income or savings on healthcare in 2023 while the same data was almost half that in 2022.

The Oral Health Data Portal of the World Health Organization reported that untreated dental caries affects 2.5 billion individuals while 1 billion people are affected by severe periodontal disease. Besides this, complete tooth loss affects 350 million individuals and about 380,000 people are affected by oral cancer. There was a high economic burden of oral diseases in 2019 when US$ 380 billion was spent on treating oral diseases globally. All of these data collections show that there is a high need for advanced dental and oral treatments and medical initiatives to improve the health status of people all over the world.
